Daily physical activity in conjunction with a balanced diet is a determining factor in our overall health and fitness levels. Sometimes it can be difficult to work out how much exercise is enough — this is where the ninemsn Health burn barometer steps in! The number of kilojoules consumed in your day, above, is purely an indication of average values as based on a 70kg female. They should be used as a guide only.

Factors that may increase or decrease the amount of energy that you expend include:

  • Intensity of work-out
  • Your individual weight: if you weigh more, you will expend more energy and vice-versa
  • Ambient temperature: the colder it is, the more energy you will expend
  • Your physical condition

You also require a certain number of kilojoules to maintain the processes that keep you alive, such as breathing.
