Snoring

Monday, July 19, 2010

Question:

My partner snores right throughout the night. He often doesn't even realise he's doing it. So that I don't have to sleep on the couch anymore, we're trying different methods to reduce or stop the snoring. He is overweight and we understand how that contributes, but there must be some interim solution while he's trying to lose some weight. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer:

Some common helpful ideas to stop snoring are to make sure the snorer sleeps on his side. Sleeping on the back always makes it worse. Don't drink alcohol before bed. Don't go to bed on a full stomach, try to allow at least three hours between eating and sleep. Make sure the sufferer can breathe through their nose. If not, find out why and treat. The Buteyko Method is a breathing technique that can be learned and practised. This has excellent results in stopping snoring.
